Obituary: Rock Valley, IA – Cornelia Broek, 93, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Hegg Memorial Hospital, Rock Valley. Memorial service will be 2 p.m., Thursday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial will be prior to the service at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Rev. Gideon Wamala and Rev. Craig Broek will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday with the family present from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
Cornelia G. Vande Garde was born November 15, 1915 in Boyden, IA, to John and Ella (Vander Pol) Vande Garde. Cornelia was united in marriage to David J. Broek on February 1, 1939 in Sioux Center, IA. Together they farmed by Sioux Center, IA, Steen, MN and Inwood, IA. In 1969 they moved to Rock Valley, IA where Cornelia was a cook at the Rock Valley Hospital for several years. Dave died May 30, 1989. Cornelia was a member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. She enjoyed doing handwork, baking cookies, crocheting hangers and sharing them with family, neighbors and friends.
Cornelia is survived by her 3 sons: Jay (Marlene) Broek of Ireton, IA, Darwin (Evanette) Broek of Florence, AZ and Roger (Linda) Broek of Ireton; 6 grandchildren: Doug (Audrey) Broek, Mel (Doug) Reuvers, Craig (Jeanine) Broek, Jill (Mike) Vander Windt, Mike (Angie) Broek and Danielle (Gerad) Gradert; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Glenn (Normaleen) Vande Garde of Kadoka, SD; 3 brothers-in-law: John Sas of Hull, IA, John Van Beek of Orange City, IA and Gaynor Te Grotenhuis of Sioux Center, IA; 4 sisters-in-law: Cora Broek, Bertie Broek, Chris (Pete) Schouten all of Sioux Center, IA and Gert Broek of Sioux Falls, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dave; sister, Gertrude Sas.
