Obituary: Hawarden, IA – Donna Draayer, 72, died Thursday, February 22, 2007 at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, Sioux City, IA. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Hawarden. Visitation with the family will be Monday from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Porter Funeral Home, Hawarden is assisting the family.
Donna Jane Draayer was born March 1, 1934 to Lloyd Sr. and Ruby Louise (Johnson) Strong in Hawarden, IA. She graduated from West Sioux High School in the Class of 1952. Donna was united in marriage to Orville "Corky" Draayer on July 18, 1953 in Vermillion, SD. Together they moved to Artesia, CA and then returned to Hawarden where Donna was a waitress at Central Café and Sale Barn Café. She was also known as the "donut maker" at Casey’s where she was a clerk. Donna delivered meals on wheels and was a Hospice volunteer. She taught Head Start, Sunday School, Bible School and Pioneer Club. She was an active member of First Baptist Church serving as a deaconess and served on the Board of Christian Education. Donna enjoyed swimming and especially spending time with her family.
Survivors include 3 sons: David Draayer of Springdale, AR, Jerry Draayer of Hawarden and his special friend, Joyce Attema of Rock Valley and Stacy Draayer and his special friend Jena of Bentonville, AR; 2 daughters: Cindy (Gary) Cernohous of Ihlen, MN and Melissa De Jager of Alton, IA; grandchildren: Lenny Schutt, Jonna Corr, Jenny Kremer, Brody and Tyler De Jager and Keiana Draayer; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers: Lloyd Jr. (Betty) "Sonny" Strong and Jon (Vicki) Strong all of Hawarden; sisters Bette "Betsy" Anderson of Hawarden and Helen "Babe" (Ray) Weyen of Sioux Center, IA; and a very special friend, Peaches the dog.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville; grandson, Jordan Merrick.
