SIBLEY—Simon DeBoom, 89, LeMars, formerly of Sibley, died Thursday, Dec. 26, at Floyd Valley
Hospital in LeMars.
Services were Monday, Dec. 30, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., in LeMars, with Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial was at Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley, under the direction of Carisen Funeral Home in LeMars.
Simon DeBoom, son of C.T. and Jenny (Boer) DeBoom, was born Dec. 23, 1913, in rural O’Brien County near Sheldon. He received his education in a rural school near Sheldon. He married Mary Mohr on April 3, 1940, in Melvin. They farmed near Sibley for many years. Mrs. DeBoom died Dec. 6, 1973. He continued to farm near Sibley. He married Marie (Lubben) Dirks at St. John’s Lutheran Church in LeMars. They retired and made their home in LeMars. He enjoyed gardening, walking, reading, crossword puzzles and playing cards. He also enjoyed visiting his family and extended family. Simon and Marie also enjoyed many vacations together and traveled through 48 states.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marie DeBoom of LeMars; three children, Gary and Suzanne DeBoom of Ashton, Margaret DeBoom of Spirit Lake, and Kermit and Pam DeBoom of Sibley; three grandchildren; four stepchildren: Sharon and Loyd Rueter of Harris, Donna and Dick Hohlfeld of Holcombe, WI, Stan and Linda Dirks of Council Bluffs, and David and Anne Dirks of Ankeny; 12 step-grandchildren; and 19 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary DeBoom; eight brothers, Arie DeBoom, Gerrit DeBoom, Cornelius DeBoom, Jacob DeBoom, John DeBoom, Tony DeBoom, Henry DeBoom and Frank DeBoom; and three sisters, Marie Vande Kamp, Lucille Luinstra and Lyda Vande Kamp.
