Sam Bruinsma, July 20, 1909-Feb. 15, 2002

SIOUX CENTER--Sam Bruinsma, 92, Sioux Center, died Friday, Feb. 15, at Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility.

Services were Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Raymond "Van" Rathbun officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Sam Bruinsma, son of Bert and T. (DeGroot) Bruinsma, was born July 20, 1909, in Center Township of Sioux County. He lived in Sioux County, mostly in Sioux Center, all of his life.

He married Gladys Boeyink on March 3, 1933, in Sioux Center. Mrs. Bruinsma died Feb. 23, 1995, in Sioux Center. For much of his life he owned and operated his own truck. He retired in the late 1970s. He became a resident of the Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility on Dec. 8, 1999.

He was a member of Central Reformed Church. He enjoyed fishing and watching baseball games, especially when members of his family were playing.

Survivors include seven sons, Wayne and Marty Bruinsma of Sioux Center, Robert and Lorna Bruinsma of Sioux Center, Joel and Donna Bruinsma of Sioux Center, Paul Bruinsma, Randy and Rita Bruinsma of Worthington, MN, Sam Bruinsma of Fullerton, CA, and Frank Bruinsma of Fullerton, CA; three daughters, Alda and William Severson of Sioux Falls, SD, Judi and Gary Wilson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Nancy and Tom De Bondt of Sioux Center; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchhildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Bruinsma; three sons, David Bruinsma on Oct. 19, 1958, Stan Bruinsma on Jan. 3, 1997, and Byron Bruinsma on June 20, 1997; a granddaughter, Debra, on Aug. 13, 1964; six brothers, Joe Bruinsma, Dick Bruinsma, infant Sam Bruinsma, Lane Bruinsma, Reynold Bruinsma and Bert Bruinsma; and two sisters, Elsie Mouw and Lena Van Putten.
