Big Springs Bubblings: Obituary of Mrs. Carlson

The grim reaper has been busy in our midst and another of our Big Springs pioneers, a true Mother in Israel, Mrs. Sophia Carlson, has gone to be with the Lord. Her oft expressed wish to "go home" has been granted.

Sophia Carlson was born June 1, 1839, in Vyby Socken, Narke, Sweden, and died May 3, 1928, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Nilsen, at the ripe age of 88 years, 11 months and 2 days. She was converted at an early age and on account of persecution of the Christians at that time she, together with her brother, Andrew Lindblom, was baptized under cover of the darkness of night June 9, 1857, by Aaron Ring and united with the Baptist church at Vyby.

On the 15th of November, 1867, she was united in marriage with Mr. Adolph Carlson and in 1869, together with a number of friends, they immigrated to America and settled in Nebraska where she lived until 1877, when the family came to Union county. The family home was a dugout but was made a real home by this courageous and cheery mother. After hard years of toil the home became the fine, comfortable one still on the old homestead, now occupied by her son Charlie. She became a member of the Big Springs Baptist church shortly after her arrival here and retained her membership until her translation to the One Triumphant. She leaves to mourn her death her son Charlie and daughter, Mrs. Ed Nilson, and three grandchildren. Her husband and four children preceded her in death. The last years of her life she was blind but her merry, happy disposition and a fine memory stood her in good stead through this affliction. Sweet is her memory to the children, relatives and all who knew her.
