PETER CARLSON DIED MONDAY
Pioneer Hawarden Citizen Passed Away in Sioux City

P. C. Carlson, retired North Western Railway company employee and for many years a resident of Hawarden, passed away at the home of his son, C. Arthur Carlson, in Sioux City early Monday morning [Sept. 9]. While he had been in gradually declining health for the past year or more, he had not been bedfast and was up and about the house Sunday and apparently passed away in his sleep.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Nelson-Berger funeral home in Sioux City with Rev. A. B. Schwertz, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church of Sioux City in charge. The remains were then brought to Hawarden and burial was in Grace Hill cemetery.

Peter C. Carlson was born in Aalsen, Norway, October 5, 1856, and passed away September 9, 1940, at the advanced age of nearly 84 years. He came to America in 1884, first locating at Hudson, S.D. A few years later he came to Hawarden and went to work for the North Western Railway company as a section hand and later became section foreman on the Northern Iowa division. About 1897 he joined in the gold rush to the Klondike country and remained there for nearly a year and a half. He resumed railroad work on his return to Hawarden. When the North Western constructed its cut-off from Hawarden to Merrill in 1910 he was made foreman of the track laying crew and when the installation was completed became foreman of the section on the Sioux City division. He continued on this assignment for many years but a few years prior to his retirement in 1927 served as section foreman at points on the line south of Sioux City, although he still continued to regard Hawarden as his home. After his retirement he conducted a second hand store in Hawarden for a few years. Since 1935 he has resided in Sioux City with his son.

His wife passed away in Hawarden in 1915. He is survived by one son, C. Arthur Carlson of Sioux City; a foster son, Fred Carlson of Hawarden, and a sister is Oslo, Norway.
