Rodney William Carlson, 72, of Arlington, Va., died April 3, 2004 at his home. A memorial service was held April 12 at Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, DC. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Rodney William Carlson was born on Feb. 26, 1932 in Hawarden, the son of Clarence and Gertrude (Sedgewick) Carlson of Alcester. He attended Finn School and graduated from Alcester High School in 1950. He served in the Air Force and completed Bachelors and Masters degrees in Russian Studies at Syracuse University. In January of 1961, he married Patricia Nary.

He worked for the Central Intelligence Agency with assignments in Moscow, London, Tokyo, Rome and New York City. He retired in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; daughters, Ingrid, Karen and Margit; son, Erik; two grandchildren; his twin brother, Bob of Alcester; and sisters, Ruth LaBarr of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Beth Helgoe of Edina, Minn.
