Dr. James M. Brown. 73, of Barron Wisconsin. and former Ireton veterinarian, died Tuesday, December 14, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Services were Friday at First United Methodist Church in Barron. Additional services were Saturday at United Methodist Church in Ireton with the Rev. Paul Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton, with military graveside rites by Bertram Post 276, American Legion of Ireton.
Brown was born on June 7, 1920, in Ireton, the son of Herbert and Ruth (Kluter) Brown. He grew up in Ireton and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the South Pacific, from 1940 to 1946. On April 2, 1944, he married Neva Houlton at Ireton. He attended Iowa State University and received a doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1951. He was in general veterinary practice in Ireton from 1951 to 1957. From 1957 to 1958, he was a clinician in medicine and surgery at the Large-Animal Veterinary Clinic at Iowa State University in Ames. He and his wife moved to Wayne, Nebraska, where he was in general veterinary practice from 1958 to 1969. He also operated a commercial SPF pg laboratory for six years in addition to his practice. He and his family moved to Barron in 1969 where he was the diagnostician at the Regional Animal Health Laboratory, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. He received a master of science degree in veterinary pathology from the University of Minnesota in 1976. He was forced to retire in 1980 due to a heart condition.
Brown was a member of AA Bovine Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association and Christian Veterinary Mission. He was a past president of the Northwest Wisconsin Veterinary Association. He was a member of the Bertram Post 276, AmerIcan Legion of Ireton and an active member of First United Methodist Church in Barron.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dr. David Brown and his wife, Kathy, of Rochester, Minnesota, William Brown and his wife, Julie, of Hopkins, Minnesota, and Daniel Brown of Barron; a daughter, Susan, and her husband, Craig Zamzow, of Clarion, Pennsylvania seven grandchildren; an American Field Service son, Phadet. of Thailand; two brothers, Robert Brown, of Hudson, South Dakota, and Ralph Brown of Ireton; and a sister, Ruth Trageser, of Hawarden.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janine; his parents; and a brother, Charles.
