Obituary: Hawarden, Iowa- Verlan Davis, 74, of Hawarden, passed away Sunday, October 24, 2010 at the Hawarden Community Hospital surrounded by her family after a short battle with cancer.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Alcester Baptist Church in Alcester, South Dakota, with Pastor Scott Conner officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with the family present beginning at 6:30 and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Alcester Baptist Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family.
Verlan Annette (Steeneck) Davis was born December 31, 1935 on a farm south of Alcester, South Dakota to George and Clara (Strom) Steeneck. She attended school at Prospect Hill Country School in Union County.
She married Cameron Davis on October 23, 1952 in Luverne, Minnesota. They lived in Alameda, California while Cameron served in the Coast Guard. They moved to a farm in Union County, South Dakota in December 1953 where they farmed together until they moved into the house of her dreams in Hawarden in August of 1981.
Verlan enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved going to auctions and was an avid collector of many things but teapots were her favorite. She also loved going to the Thrift Store for the bargains and visiting with "her" ladies.
Verlan was always concerned for everyone around her and she will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her husband Cameron of 58 years; two sons, Randy (Lori) Davis, Rick Davis and one daughter, Lori (Tom) Bockelman all of Hawarden, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Heath, Tiffany (Nick), Bobbie Sue, Sadie, Sophie, Christopher, and Krystal; three great-grandsons, Tristan, Justin, and Jayden; her "special" great-granddaughter, Ava; her special Nebraskans, Jo, Melvin and Ben, Cliff and Elaine of Bryant, South Dakota; a sister-in-law, Delores Steeneck of Beresford, South Dakota and her very special friend Marge Eilers of Alcester.
Verlan was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Douglas; and a brother, Wayne.
