Obituary: Larchwood, IA - John Van Voorst, 57, died suddenly Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Avera-McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Rock Valley, IA. Burial at Valley View Cemetery. Rev. P.L. Bazen officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday until 4 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, then with family present 6-8 pm at Netherlands Reformed Christian School, Rock Valley. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Netherlands Reformed Christian School or American Cancer Society. John Van Voorst was born March 13, 1953 in Sioux Center, IA, son of Henry and Gertie (Fluit) Van Voorst. He graduated from Sioux Center High School. John married Shirley Rus on August 9, 1973 in Corsica, SD. Together they lived in Brandon and later in Larchwood. John has worked for Gerry's Concrete of Brandon for over 30 years. John was a Deacon at Sioux Fall's Netherlands Reformed Church before being a Deacon at Netherlands Reformed Congregation at Rock Valley. John is survived by his wife, Shirley; 2 sons: Jason Van Voorst and Aaron (Sandie) Van Voorst all of Brandon, SD; 2 daughters: Larissa (Jeff) Schroder of Brandon, Rachel (Nathan) Wentzel of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Jayde and Gabriella Schroder, Logan and Hannah Wentzel, Kate and Owen Van Voorst, Clay and Dawson Van Voorst; 5 brothers: Tunis (Jacqi) Van Voorst of Sioux Center, IA, Jake (Carrie) Van Voorst of Rock Valley, Clarence (Carol) Van Voorst of Hull, IA, Henry (Judy) Van Voorst of Canton, Gerald (Joyce) Van Voorst of Sioux Falls; 5 sisters: Jeanette (John) Van Ginkel of Rock Valley, Cynthia Amick of Jefferson City, MO, Mary (Harvey) Driesen of Rock Valley, Joann Driesen of Sioux Center, Ruth (Jake) Anker of Chilliwack, BC.He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gertie; brothers-in-law: Harold Driesen and Gary Amick.
