Obituary: Rock Valley, IA: Richard Groeneweg, 88, of Rock Valley, died Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Hegg Memorial Hospital. Memorial Service will be 11 am Wednesday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial prior at Valley View Cemetery. Rev. Gideon Wamala and Rev. John Engbers will be officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday with the family present 6-8pm at Porter Funeral Home.
Richard was born January 28, 1922 near Rock Valley, son of Johannes and Elizabeth (Brouwer) Groeneweg. Richard married Frances Wissink on February 21, 1945. Together they farmed NW of Rock Valley 1 year before farming east of Rock Valley for 38 years before retirement due to his poor eyesight. Richard and Frances moved to Rock Valley in 1983. Richard was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church. Rich enjoyed singing and playing guitar, everything about farm life, enjoyed riding through the countryside with his nephew Harold Boer, and most of all spending time with his family and friends.Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Frances; son, Richard Jr (Millie) Groeneweg of Coto De Caza, CA; daughters, Carol (Ed) Ver Burg of Rock Valley, Sandy (Bill) Van Kley of Sioux Center, IA, Bev (Rod) Jacobsma of Doon, IA; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren.Richard was preceded in death by brothers and their spouses Paul and Margaret, John and Cornelia, Peter and Freda, Walter and Jess, and Joe and Ida; sisters and their husbands, Jen and Ray Boer, and Gert and Henry Elbers; infant brother, Reinder.
