THOMAS GANT DIES AFTER A LONG ILLNESS
Restaurant Operator Passed Away Last Saturday
Had Lived in Hawarden for Fourteen Years; Funeral Services Were Held Monday Morning

Thomas B. Gant, a resident of Hawarden for more than 14 years, passed away at his home Saturday morning, following a long illness.

Mr. Gant had lost one eye over a year ago, and submitted to an operation for the removal of the other eye at a Sioux City hospital Wednesday, March 31. He was brought home last Friday afternoon in an ambulance. It was believed at first that he was recovering satisfactorily, but complications developed which caused his death.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock Monday morning and requiem high mass was read by Rev. R. Graf. Interment was in Calvary cemetery.

Thomas B. Gant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gant, was born on a farm near Westfield, March 3, 1902, and passed away April 6, 1943, at the age of 41 years, 1 month and 4 days. When he was about three years of age, his mother died and for a few years [he] lived in St. Anthony's home in Sioux City. Later he returned to the farm near Westfield where he grew to young manhood.

He was united in marriage with Ruth Kinnleyside in Sioux City Jan. 16, 1926, and to this union was born one son. After his marriage they lived for two years at Westfield, where they operated a meat market. In 1928, he purchased two more markets, one from T. S. Huyck of Hawarden and another one at Akron. He came to Hawarden that year to operate the Gant market. Over a year ago the market was remodeled and a cafe has been operated in connection with it.

He is survived by his wife and son, Richard; four brothers, Leonard of Geddes, S.D.; Steve and William of Akron, and Emmett of Sioux City, and four sisters, Sister Wilfred of Clinton; Mrs. Gladys Cahill of Davenport; Mrs. Laura McGruder of Le Mars; and Mrs. Rita Kirby of Minneapolis.

The last six months of his life, Mr. Gant had lost his sight, but even his most intimate friends were unaware of this. He displayed great fortitude during his years of suffering.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gant and Mr. and Mrs. William Gant of Akron; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Gant and Miss Beatrice Roth of Geddes, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dennison, Mrs. T. A. Dennison and A. A. Martin of Westfield; Wm. Dennison and Mrs. Emmett Gant of Sioux City, and Mrs. Laura McGruder of Le Mars.
