Campagne, Mrs. Steve, died 1942 age 71

MRS. S. CAMPAGNE, 71, DIES SUDDENLY

Mrs. Steve Campagne, 71, died at the local hospital early Tuesday night [Oct. 6] following an operation for a ruptured appendix that afternoon. Mrs. Campagne had been in failing health for several years.

Funeral services will be held next Monday, Oct. 12th, 1:30 at the home and 2 o'clock at the First Chr. Reformed Church. Interment will be at Sioux Center.

Survivors include her husband, and son Fred of Artesia, Calif., also 2 grandchildren, Stanley Van Vliet who is with the U.S. Navy at San Diego, and Stanley Campagne of Sioux Center. A daughter, Mrs. Wm. Van Vliet, passed away nine years ago.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. M. B. Niemeyer of Hull, Mrs. John Kleyn of Rock Valley, and one brother, Ralph Kastein of Doon. Three sisters preceded Mrs. Campagne in death, namely, Mrs. R. Kooi, Hawarden, Mrs. Case Schelling, Sioux Center, and Mrs. Mary Int Velt of Washington.

Mrs. Campagne was born in Alton [Alto?], Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Campagne have both lived in Sioux Center for the past 60 years. Mr. Campagne has been in business for approximately 45 years being a blacksmith about 50 years ago. He retired from the smithy trade after ten years of active work due to his health. He later sold Ford cars and has served on the town council for the past 13 years.

Fred Campagne is expected home from Artesia, Calif. for his mother's funeral on Monday.

A similar obituary in the Sioux County Index (Hull), Oct. 15, 1942, states that she came to Sioux Center as a small child, and spells her sister's surname "Nymeyer."

A similar obituary in the Alton Democrat, Oct. 16, 1942, adds this information:

Forty eight years ago she was married to Mr. Campagne. About a month ago they sold their new home to Mr. Henry Smith and planned to go to California to be with their son, Fred.
