ERLENE KADING, LONG-TIME TEACHER AND WEST SIOUX SUPPORTER, DIES

Erlene Eddy Kading, 90, of Ireton, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 at the Hawarden Community Hospital.

Mrs. Kading was a long-time educator and supporter of education at West Sioux. She was a retired member of the West Sioux Education Foundation and she and her husband, Ed, had given generously to the foundation. They were also great supporters of their hometown, Ireton, and in 1999, Mrs. Kading established the Ireton Community Fund.

"My husband and I had discussed this many times before his death in 1998," she said at the time. "We wanted to plant the first seeds to establish an endowment fund that would help support the social, economical, cultural, and charitable needs of the Ireton community; a community that we are proud to call home."

Mrs. Kading was born Feb. 15, 1911 near Ireton, to Frank J. and Della (Eddy) Parrott. She graduated from Ireton Public School in 1928, and was a member of the Ireton girls' basketball team that had won the Sioux County girls' basketball championship that year.

Following graduation, she received her teaching certificate from Westmar College in Le Mars. She taught in country schools for 10 years between the Kuecher and Vander Hamm schools in Reading Township and Craig school in Plymouth Township. She married Edward John Kading of Ireton on Aug. 28, 1939 at Sioux City. She returned to teaching in 1956 at the Ireton Public School where she taught for nearly 21 years. During that time she went on to get her four year college degree and fell just short of attaining her masters degree.

The Kadings farmed in rural Ireton until 1979. Mr. Kading died on Jan. 11, 1998.

Mrs. Kading was active in many community and church affairs. She was a member of the Ireton Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the West Sioux Retired Teachers. She was a charter member of the Ireton Historical Society and a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Northwest Iowa Aging Commission.

Her funeral service was Friday at the United Methodist Church in Ireton with Pastor Stuart Schreur and Pastor Kevin Schneider officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton. Porter Funeral Home in Ireton was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include: niece, Mary Jane Bean of Cottage Grove, Wis.; great-nieces, Jody (Esser) Grossman of Cottage Grove and Lori Esser of Chicago, Ill.; great-nephew, Lt. Lee Esser of Elizabethtown, Ky; two great-great nieces; and sister-in-law, Elvira Kading of Ireton.
