Gardner, Mrs. D. O. (Martha) - 1842-1905

The remains of Mrs. D. O. Gardner arrived Tuesday evening from Sunnyside, Washington, in charge of her daughter, Mrs. Maude Bennett. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Church, the Rev. J. B. Chase of Aurelia conducting them. The interment took place at Hope Cemetery, the body being laid to rest by the side of her husband, D. O. Gardner, who died in the summer of 1898.

Martha J. Miller was born in Ohio on March 6, 1842. In 1854 with her parents she moved to Benton County, Iowa. In Aug. 1866 she was married to Daniel O. Gardner at Vinton, Iowa. Ex-governor Buren R. Sherman pronouncing the ceremony. Mr. & Mrs. Gardner lived at Palo, Linn County until 1872 when they removed to Sioux County, homesteading the farm now owned by H. Langhout. Until the death of Mr. Gardner in June 1898, she made her home in Lincoln Township. at the farm, in Hull and at Perkins. After the death of her husband she made her home with her daughter Mande at Spencer and in 1902 they removed to Sunnyside, Wash. where her death occurred from cancer of the bowels.

Mrs. Gardner was converted when a young girl and had always led a christian life being a member of the Cong. church at the time of her death. Although the past few months have been filled with terrible suffering, she bore her trials with christian fortitude and patience.

Five children are left to mourn the death of their mother, Mrs. Kate Sticknes of Morningside, Sioux City, Mrs. May Miller of Zion City, Ill., Mrs. Maude Bennett and Ozra and Emily Gardner, of Sunnyside, Wash. Here in Hull where she is best known, Mrs. Gardner was for years a leading worker in educational religious temperance and patriotic work, among the older residents of this vicinity she was held in high esteem.
