Nicholas Gaul, 89, of Alton died Sunday, June 26, 1994 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a brief illness.

Services were held Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. The Rev. Ronald J. Reicks officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen.

Nicholas was born April 9, 1905 in rural Granville, the son of Peter and Catherine (Delperdang) Gaul. He was raised and educated in the Granville and Alton areas. He married Antonette Haupert Jan. 12, 1926 in Bancroft. The couple made their home in Alton where he was a self employed carpenter and contractor, working in Plymouth and Sioux counties. In later years he was a cabinetmaker. They moved to The Abbey in LeMars on Nov. 19, 1993.

Mr. Gaul was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Alton and the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Sheldon. He had been an avid pilot for more than 20 years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Donald and Vera of LeMars; John and Nancy of Independence, and Joseph and Linda of Kansas City, Mo; four daughters, Shirley and her husband, Richard Henshaw of Park Rapids, Minn.; Delores Penning of Omaha; Audrey and her husband, James Hibbing of Denison, and Helen Fisher of Clinton; 28 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; a brother, Martin of LeMars, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred (Alice) Gaul of South Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by a son, James; a grandson, Patrick Gaul; eight brothers, his twin, Frederick, John, Peter, Lambert, Anton, Ferdinand, Joseph and Anthony and five sisters, Mrs. Fred (Rose) Croat, Mrs. Emil (Margaret) Hansen, Mrs. Mike (Katherine) Holles, Mrs. Ernest (Ann) Kern and Mrs. John (Mary) Vorthems. Pallbearers were grandsons.
