From the Alton Democrat of Dec 23, 1893 Orange City News.
Died: At the homr of Mrs. John Brink, G. J. Pennings, aged 71 years, one of the first settlers. The funeral occurred Monday from the First Reformed church. A large number of relatives followed the remains to the grave. (In 1880 Sioux County census G. J. Pennings was living with his son Arend Penning and wife Johanna. In an account on ancestry.com (work done by others) Gerrit Jan Pennings born 16 Sep 1822 in Aalten Gelderland, Netherlands died 15 Dec 1893 Orange City IA. Wife was Gerritjen Pennings, 1830 -1866. Paretns were Berent Pennings 1786-1870 and Willemina Kleuvers. Children were: Willemina 1850-1911, Arend Jan 1852-1928, Berend 1853-1855, Gesina 1856-1865, Benerndina 1857-1935, Johanna 1861-1937, and Berend 1865-1865.
