Mrs. Lemuel Allen, one of the pioneer women of Sioux County, died Friday, April 9, at Emmet, Neb., where she has made her home with her youngest daughter, Miss Agnes Allen, since the death of her husband in 1904. She was 80 years of age at the time of her death. The body was brought to Ireton for interment and brief funeral services were held at 4:30 Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, Rev. Neil Stewart preaching the funeral sermon. The body was then laid to rest in a grave beside that of her husband in the Ireton cemetery. Margaret McMillan was born at Alexanderis, Can., March 10, 1840. She was united in marriage in 1865 to Lemuel Allen. They made their home in Canada until 1871 when they came to Sioux County and located on a homestead in the southeast part of Reading Township. There were other Allens in the community and to distinguish him, he was called "Canada" Allen, a name by which he became familiarly known throughout southern Sioux and northern Plymouth counties. They passed through all the privations of the grasshopper days and endured the hardships incident to those pioneer times. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom are still living. The grieving children are: Mrs. Chas, Ison of Alcester, S.D.; Dougal Allen of Emmet, Neb.; Mrs. Margaret Millard of Washington, D.C.; Hamlet and Edgar Allen of Indianapolis and Miss Agnes Allen of Emmet, Neb. Five of the children were born on the Sioux County homestead. All of them except the daughter who resides in Washington, D.C. were present at the funeral. A number of the older residents of the community attended the services and all tender their sincere sympathy to the bereaved sons and daughters.
