Mr. Jay Even, age 84, of Alton, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at his residence.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, September 10, at 10:30am, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. The Rev. Father Paul Eisele and Monsignor Nicholas Ruba will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Thursday, with a rosary at 5:30pm, a vigil service at 7:30pm, and the family present from 5:00pm to 6:00pm and 7:00pm to 8:30pm, at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Joseph was born on August 7, 1926, in Alton, the son of Joseph T. "Matty" and Blanche (Sauer) Even. He was raised at Alton, where he graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School. He served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received the Bronze Star for his service in Korea, and he was discharged as a Master Sergeant.

On November 3, 1951, he married Lois J. Weber at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. They made their home in Alton, where he was with the Even Motor Company until 1960. He then became a sales representative for the Bear Manufacturing Company, selling automotive service equipment. Eventually, he became Bear’s regional manager for several Midwestern states. In 1983, he started his own company, representing several automotive equipment lines.

Jay was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Floyd American Legion Post, and the Sioux Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting. He and Lois enjoyed many winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona.

Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years; three children and their spouses, Joe and Lynn Even, of Omaha, Nebraska; Jean and Darlo Boone, of Sheldon; and Bill and Monna Even, of Oxford, Ohio; six grandchildren, Aaron Boone, and his wife, Melissa, and Jason Boone, all of Sheldon; LuAnne Even, of Springfield, Missouri; Mathew Even, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Ben Even, of San Francisco, California; and Joseph Even, of Oxford; a great-granddaughter, Emma Boone; three brothers and their wives, Mike and Jane Even, of Alton; Jack and Janet Even, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Jim and Carol Even, of Port Clinton, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Lois Even, of Sioux City; and Carol, and her husband, Jeff Halstrom, of Yuma, Arizona; and two sisters-in-law, Rita Delperdang and Florentine Weber, both of Marcus.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Tom and Dorothy Even.
