Rock Valley, IA: Gerrit A. Van Maanen, 84, of Rock Valley, went to his heavenly home Monday, September 20, 2010 at home. Memorial Service will be 11 am Thursday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial will be prior at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday with the family present 6-8 pm Wednesday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Gerrit was born October 21, 1925 on the family farm SE of Rock Valley, son of Arie and Jennie (DeVries) Van Maanen. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. Gerrit married Joan Van Veldhuizen on June 11, 1954 at Rock Valley. Together they lived on the Van Maanen family farm until retiring to Rock Valley in 1989. Gerrit then worked for Hope Haven and volunteered at Wheelchair International Ministries. He was a lifetime member of First Christian Reformed Church where he served as an Elder and taught catechism and Sunday School. Gerrit enjoyed camping, hiking, playing games and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Joan; son, Don (Colleen) Van Maanen of Lynden, WA; daughters, Sherry (Fred) Farr of Chino Hills, CA, Karen (Steve) Groen of Minneapolis, MN, Arlys (Rick) Jasper of Ontario, CA, Connie (Mike) Grevengoed of Hull, IA; brother, John (Marvis) Van Maanen of Lakewood, CA; sisters, Henrietta Kempema and Arta Kempema both of Rock Valley; brothers-in-law, Fred Bakker of Sanborn, IA, Ron (Gert) Van Veldhuizen of Rock Valley; sisters-in-law, Claretta (John) Lobbes of Orange City, IA, Elaine Bolkema and Winifred Van Veldhuizen both of Rock Valley; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.

Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Wilmina Wintersyk, Harriet Bakker, and Margaret Kuiken
