Don R. Barnard, 89, of Hawarden, IA, died on Sunday, October 27, 1991, at the Hawarden Community Hospital. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, October 30, 1991, at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden, the Rev. Fredrich Mellberg officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Barnard was born on July 4, 1902 in Sloan, IA, and moved with his family to Onawa, IA in his youth. He graduated from high school in 1920, and attended Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. He became a licensed funeral director in 1923, working with his father, John, in the mortuary.
On August 27, 1925, he married Mary Metcalf at Hawarden. The couple operated the Barnard Funeral Home in Hawarden from September 29, 1929, until their retirement in 1965; the business became the Dow Funeral Home, and is presently the Porter-Dow Funeral Home. Mrs. Barnard died on February 17, 1984.
Mr. Barnard was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge and York Rite Bodies Council Chapter Commandry. He received a 50-year certificate from the Iowa Funeral Directors Association May 1, 1974. He was a member of the Associated Church in Hawarden.
Survivors include a sister, Jean Messer of Walnut Creek, CA; a sister-in-law, Mildred Barnard, of Onawa; and several nieces and nephews.
