Nickolaus Wendel, 95, of Hawarden, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 1990) at the Hawarden hospital.

Funeral was held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 5 at the Porter-Dow funeral home at Hawarden. Rev. Paul Hansen officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Wendel was born May 14, 1894, at Vadersdorf Fehmarn, Germany, and came to the United States at age 14. He served in the U.S. Army from 1919 to 1922. During that time, he married Fredericka Strause in Germany. The couple farmed near Hawarden until 1955 when they retired and moved into town. She died April 27, 1980. Mr. Wendel was a member of the Last Man/s club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Eagles Lodge.

Survivors are two sons, Arthur of Mastic, N.Y., and Johnie of Winder, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. James (Dorothy) Skogman of Hawarden and Mrs. Jack (Maxine) Odom of Wichita Falls, Tex.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
