Rev. Charles D. Gearhart, an early day resident of Calliope and Hawarden, passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Frank Bancroft in Sioux City Sunday night following a lingering illness. Rev. Gearhart had retired from the ministry and had been living at the home of his sister since May 5th of this year.
Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in Grace Reformed Church in Sioux City. Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery at Wayne, Neb. Mr. & Mrs. J. E. Gearhart and son David, and Mrs. D. W. Shrake of Hawarden, accompanied by Mr. & Mrs. David Gearhart and daughters, Mrs. Dewey Brinker and Mrs. Bernice Merose, of Pukwana, S.D., attended the funeral. Mr. & Mrs. James Barclay of Ipswich, S.D., and their daughter and husband, Mr. & Mrs. Art Norby of Aberdeen, S.D., also came to attend the funeral.
Charles Gearhart was born Aug. 22, 1863, in Ohio and so was almost 72 years of age. While still a small child he moved with his parents to Cherokee and when he was 10 years old the family moved to Calliope and he lived here for a number of years. He became a Congregational minister at the age of 21 years and at one time he served a church in Denver and he also held pastorates at other places in Colorado and in Nebraska and South Dakota. He retired from the ministry five years ago and most of the time since then he had lived in Florida. He spent some time in Hawarden a year or two ago visiting at the home of his brother, J. E. Gearhart. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ellen Gearhart; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Bancroft, Sioux City; Mrs. James Barclay, Ipswich, S.D.; and Mrs. Strode Bingman, Cleveland; and two brothers, David Gearhart, Pukwana, S.D., and John E. Gearhart, Hawarden.
