BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL

Funeral of Mrs. H. L. Stiles Held Here Saturday Afternoon

The funeral of Mrs. H. L. Stiles, whose death occurred on June 3rd at Sturgis, S.D., was held at the Methodist church in this city Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Warner M. Hubbard, pastor of the Rustin Avenue Methodist church of Sioux City, assisted by the local Methodist pastor, Rev. W. A. Winterstein. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery where the husband of Mrs. Stiles was buried ten years ago.

Sarah E. Royce was born in McDonough county, Ill., on Oct. 26, 1844, so at the time of her death had attained the age of 79 years, 7 months and 7 days. On Aug. 17, 1863, she was united in marriage with H. L. Stiles at Carthage, Ill. From Illinois they came to Hawarden in 1883 and lived here until 1901 when they moved to Jamison, Neb.

To Mr. and Mrs. Stiles were born ten children, two sons and eight daughters. The two sons preceded her in death but the eight daughters are all living and six of them were present at the funeral. One of them, Mrs. Rose Brunskill, lives in Hawarden; Mrs. E.M. Sayles lives at Sturgis, S.D.; Mrs. Simon Scheie at Jamison, Neb., Mrs. Severt Easthouse at Hazel, S.D.; Mrs. Geo. Satterlee at Salem, Ore; Mrs. J.C.Keating at Humboldt, S.D.; Mrs. Geo. Vosburg at Palms, Calif.; and Mrs. I. E. McCumber at Burke, S.D.

Mr. Stiles passed away at Jamison, Neb., in 1914. Since that time Mrs. Stiles has made her home for the most part with her daughter, Mrs. Scheie, at Jamison, visiting at times with her other children. She passed away at Sturgis, S.D., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sayles.

Mrs. Stiles belonged to the sturdy pioneer stock which has made this country what it is today. Coming here in a very early day when there were few physical comforts and almost no luxuries, when doctors were not many and trained nurses unknown, she took her place in the life of the community, doing her share of its work in addition to caring for here own large family. Often she heard the call to come to the bedside of some sick neighbor or to render assistance when a new life came into the world and she was found where she was needed. She very early united with the Methodist church and remained a faithful member until her death.

It is of such as she that a great country is made. Strong, cheerful, faithful, tender hearted, with a firm faith in a God of love and goodness she continued until her death a blessing to those who knew her.
It might be said of her as it has been said of another. "Her life was a blessing her memory is a benediction."
