Francis Leonard "Fritz" Den Hartog, 86, of Modesto, died Tuesday, October 28th at his home.

Fritz was born in Alton, Iowa on October 22, 1917, the son of John and Anna Den Hartog. The family later moved to Hospers, Iowa.

He served in the Army from 1940-45. While in the service, on April 10, 1942, he married Ada Noteboom in Bellflower, CA. After his discharge, they moved to Modesto.

He was a ditch tender with the Modesto Irrigation District from 1954-81. Fritz was a member of the Modesto Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed golf, fishing, travel and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Ada Den Hartog of Modesto; children, Carol (Harold) Docter, Kathi (John) Blattler, Lori Brenneke all of Modesto and Beverly (Ron) Rausch of Stockton. Brothers, Richard of Primghar, IA, Donald of Orange City, IA, and John Junior of Hospers, IA. Sisters, Angeline Zwagerman of Brooten, MN; Genevieve Van Kooten of Sanborn, IA; Alma Van Kley of Sheldon, IA; and Wanda Felmlee of Cokato, MN. Six grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Larry Brenneke, two brothers, Alvin "Bob: of Boyden, Howard of Flint, MI, and one sister, Wilma Dekker of Bryon Center, MI.

A graveside service was at 9:30 AM, Friday at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, CA, followed by an 11 A.M., Memorial service at Modesto Christian Reformed Church. Visitation was from 5-8 P.M., at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.
