Jens Jensen of Hawarden Dies At Age of 82
Jens Peter Jensen, 82, died at the Hawarden hospital Tuesday, November 20, 1956, culminating years of ill health. Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church Rev. Paul Williams officiating. Burial was at Grace Hill cemetery under the direction of the Barnard Funeral home.
The soloist was James Squier who sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “Lily of the Valley,” accompanied by Mrs. J.E. Tilgner at the organ.
Mr. Jensen was born at Transum Klit, Denmark, on September 19, 1874, a son of Thomas Peter and Elsie Marie Jensen. On December 14, 1898 he married Anna Dorothy Marie Thomsen. To this union were born eight children. They came to America in 1909 and settled at Viborg, SD.
In the fall of 1915 the family moved to Hawarden where Mr. Jensen was employed by the Northwestern Railroad until 1934, when he retired because of ill health. Mrs. Jensen died in 1941.
He is survived by two sons, Walter of Alcester and Sophus of Denver; six daughters, Mrs. D. Marie Lewis of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Fred Knight of Akron, Mrs. Katherine Dowdey, Mrs. Emil Lindgren, Mrs. Wilbert Cain and Miss Minnie Jensen, all of Hawarden, a sister, Mrs. Catrine Nielsen of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Martinus, at Brovst, Denmark; 28 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Those from out of town attending the funeral included Mrs. D. Lewis and daughter, Helen Marie, Mr. and Mrs. Sophus Jensen, Delores, Donald and Duane and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Knight of Denver; Derold Jensen of San Diego, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Evert Nelson of Vermillion; Mr. and Mrs. Robert miner and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jensen, Hugh and Bruce of Le Mars; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knight and Barbara of Akron; and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lind, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Anderson, Art Lind, Miss Ann Lind, Mr. and Mrs. Ward Goldy and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ludwig, all of Alcester.
