Merlin Waggoner, 77, of Hawarden died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1992, ,at Hass Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden.
Memorial services were Tuesday at the First Baptist church in Hawarden with Rev. George Henriksen officiating. The body has been donated to the University of South Dakota Medical School. Porter-Dow Funeral Home of Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Waggoner was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Marshall, Minn., the son of Phillip and Minnie (Beck) Waggoner. He graduated from Alcester S.D. high school. Jan. 18, 1942, he married Harriet Johnson at the Johnson family farm in" Union County, S^D., west of Hawarden. The couple farmed in Union county until moving into Hawarden in 1948. He owned and operated the Waggoner Ready Mix Plant and then raised mink. He later was a salesperson at the McCarthy Implement and later the Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership. He was a houseparent and manager of. the buildings and grounds at Sioux Empire college from its beginning in 1967, until illness forced him to retire.
Mr. Waggoner was baptized and became a member of Big Springs Baptist church and was currently a member of the First Baptist Church. He had served on the West Sioux School board for two terms during the school's reorganization in 1959. He also coached baseball for many years in the summer recreation program.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Barton and Janice of Glendora, Calif., and M. Phillip and Beverly of Edina, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Hugo (Fern) Gustofson of Sweden; and three grandchildren, Chad, Brady and Robin.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Glen Waggoner.
