Peter Van De Griend, 76, of Alcester, S.D., died Sunday, May 31, 1992, at Iowa Community Hospital in Hawarden.
Services were Tuesday at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden. The Rev. Marvin Vander Vliet officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton, Ia., with military rites conducted by Bertram Post 276, American Legion of Ireton. Arrangements were under direction of Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mr. Van De Griend was born May 28, 1916, in Orange City, the son of Ben and Gertrude (Zwagerman) VanDe Griend. A four-year veteran of the army, he served in Germany during World War II. He married Dorothy Van Wyhe Feb. 5, 1947, in Middleburg, la. The couple farmed near Orange City and Ireton until 1960, when they began fanning at Alcester. They retired into Alcester in 1981. She died July 30, 1991. He was a member of the Christian Reformed church of Hawarden, where he served as elder and deacon.
Survivors include a brother and his wife, Jack B. and Jess Van De Griend of Orange City; and two sisters and their husbands, Nell and Steve Van Iperen of Orange City and Berdena and Adolph Bylsma of Hull, la.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Bertha.
