HARVEY BARNARD, PROMINENT LEGION MAN, PASSES ON

Funeral services for Harvey A. Barnard, 71, will be held at St. Mary's Catholic church at Rock Valley, Thursday morning at 9 a.m., with the pastor, Rev. R. W. Reinhart, officiating, with burial at St. Mary's cemetery there.

Mr. Barnard died Friday [April 24] in Palmetto, Florida, where he had spent the past six winters. He was born September 20, 1892, at Sac City, Iowa, and came to Rock Valley about 1921. He was pharmacist at the Corner drug store for many years and also served for years as town clerk.

A veteran of World War I, Mr. Barnard was active for many years in the American Legion, serving as commander of Fox-Pfarrer post of Rock Valley and also of the county association of American Legion posts. He attended many district, state and national American Legion conventions.

Survivors include the widow, the former Euda Wiggerman; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Patten of Alta, Iowa, and Mrs. Lulu Nelson of Lake View, Iowa, and a brother, Art, of Mitchell, S.D.

A similar obit was published in the Sioux Center News, April 30, 1964.

It states that the Rosary was given Wednesday evening at Porter's Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Barnard came to Rock Valley in 1921 to work as pharmacist at the drug store with W. B. Hansen. Later he worked for Smith's Pharmacy, retiring about five years ago.

It gives his siblings as one brother, Art, of Mitchell, S.D., and twin sisters, Flora (Mrs. Allen Patyen) of Alta [Iowa] and Lula (Mrs. Elmer Nelson) of Lakeview, Iowa.

It says he was an active member of the Veterans of World War I, as well as of the American Legion.
