Gerald "Jerry" Smith, 42, mayor of Alpena, S.D., formerly of Hawarden, died Saturday (Dec. 14,1985) of injuries suffered in a automobile accident north of O'Neill, Neb.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Martin's Catholic church in Huron, S.D. The Rev. Rodney Farke officiated. Additional services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic church in Hawarden. The Rev. Edmund Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Hill cemetery under the direction of Dow funeral home of Hawarden.
Mr. Smith was born April 14, 1943 to Ward and Marie Rozell Smith, near Akron and graduated from the Hawarden High School. He married Kathleen Adams, Sept. 29, 1962 in Hawarden.
He was employed as a foreman in various meat packing plants for 18 years. The couple moved to Alpena in 1978. He operated a locker plant there until 1979. He was manufacturing Alpena Kippered Beef. Mr. Smith served on the Alpena towa board and was serving as mayor. He was a member of St. Martin's Catholic church in Huron.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Todd, Terry and Tracy, all of Alpena; a daughter, Theresa of Alpena; his father, Ward Smith of O'Neill, Neb.; three brothers, Duane of Sioux City, Daryl of Westfield, and Ronald of O'Neill; a sister, Mrs. Russell (Judy) Thomas of O'Neill, and his grandmother, Mrs. Elvera Smith of Akron.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Rozell Smith.
