Nellie Franken, 83, of Sioux Center died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Kosgrove Estates in Sioux Center.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Dec. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at Carmel Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Mark Heijerman officiated. Burial was at Carmel Cemetery, Rock Valley under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, Sioux Center.

Nellie was born May 26, 1918, on a farm near Sanborn, the daughter of John and Elsie Broek. She attended country school through the 8th grade. She married James Franken on May 26, 1939, at her parents' home. The couple lived on various farm acreages in the Sioux Center area. They moved to Sioux Center where they resided for 26 years. Nell was employed at Schouten's Grocery and Hy-Vee. She also was involved with milking while living on the farm.

Mrs. Franken was a member of Carmel Reformed Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and a Ladies Aid member. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, crocheting, visiting residents in nursing homes and wintering with her husband in Mesa, Ariz.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; a son and his wife, Art and Eldean of Sioux Center; a son-in-law and his wife, Gerrit and Helma Davelaar of Inwood; a son and his wife, John and Phyllis of Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Bill and Ina of Orange City, Cornie and Bridie of Sioux Center and John and Gert of Tea, S.D.; five sisters, Margaret DeKoter of Orange City, Mathilda and her husband John Van Beek of Ireton, Bertha and her husband Clarence Klein of Orange City, Elsie and her husband Gaynor Te Grotenhuis of Sioux Center and Chris and her husband Pete Schouten of Ireton; and two sisters-in-law, Cornelia Broek of Rock Valley and Cora Broek of Sioux Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Eleanor; two brothers, Dave and Arend; and a grandson, Brian Franken.
