Alfred Franken, 76, of Carmel died Friday, February 12, in a hospital in Sioux Center. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, at Carmel Reformed Church with the Rev. Virgil Dykstra officiating. Burial was in the Carmel Cemetery.

Franken was born November 15, 1911, in rural Carmel where he lived his youth and attended school. He married Henrietta Overman Dec. 30, 1932. The couple lived at Carmel all their married life. He owned and operated Franken Garage for more than 40 years. His wife died July 21, 1985. He was a member of Carmel Reformed Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Alice Remmerde and Frieda Bartels, both of Rock Valley, Ardean De Haan of Orange City and Mary Ann Van Veldhuizen of Turner, Oregon; a son, Alvin of Sioux Center; a brother, James of Sioux Center; two sisters, Hermina Wynia and Elizabeth Van Maanen, both of Maurice; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
