From the Alton Democrat of May 13, 1893 Maurice News.
Frank Burkhart is dead! These were the astounding words that flew throught our town last Saturday. About half past one o'clock. To say that every person was shocked but feebly expresses the feeling that all experienced at the dreadful news. He had eaten a hearty dinner and was driving to the Northern depot for freight, accompanied by Charlie McDonald, a boy of about 14 years. When about half way between the barn and deot, he fell forward on his dray, simply saying 'Oh! Oh1" and was dead. The remains were taken in charge by the I.O.O.F., of which society he had lately become a member and taken to Marathon for interment, nearly all the members of the ladge accompanying them. Frank was noted for his happy, genial dispoition, that always made him hosts of friends. May he rest in peace.
(In the Sioux County Death records Frank Burkhart age 31 years 5 mo. died May 6, 1893. Since he was taken to Marathon, Buena Vista County for burial, census records were checked for that area for family. Only possible brother may have been Irwin Burkhard b. Mar 1865 living in Buena Vista Co. in 1900. Further investigation showed many Frank Burkharts with born dates of the early 1860s so no positive identity was determined.)
