William (Smokey) Smits, 72, died Thursday morning at a Sioux City hospital.
He was born July 10, 1913 at Maurice, the son of John and Dena (Meylink) Smits. He married Caroline Brink on December 14, 1938 at Maurice.
He lived all his life in rural Maurice where he farmed and was in the butchering business.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Maurice.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline; three daughters, Mrs. Rod Darlene) Kluis of Maurice, Mrs. Terry (Karen Dykstra of Alton and Barbara of Escondido, California; three sons, Gerald and Bruce of Escondido, California, and James of Maurice; two brothers, Ted of Maurice and Marvin of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters, Mrs. Bill( Susan) Jongbloed of Clark, S.D., and Elsie Medsker of Wahpeton, N.D. and one half sister, Mrs. Dirk (Dora) Haarsma of Orange City; and 16 grand-children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one half brother, one brother and three sisters.
