Simon was the son of Gerrit and Jennie (Wagenaar) Harmelink.

On January 28, 1926, he married Matilda Van Meeveren at Orange City. They farmed at Newkirk until 1933, when they moved to a farm north of Alton. In 1948, they moved into Orange City.

In the fall of 1990, they became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home, and in the summer of 1992, they transferred to the Heritage House Nursing Home, both in Orange City. Mrs. Harmelink passed away March 29, 1993, at Orange City, IA.
Mr. Harmelink was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory as an elder. In earlier years, he served on the board of directors of the Newkirk Public School. Later, he was a member of the city council of Orange City.
Survivors include his four children and their spouses, Wilbur and Harriet Harmelink, of Orange City; Jean and Joseph Muyskens of Homewood, Illinois; Clifford and Barb Harmelink of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Dennis and Nellie Harmelink of Olathe, Kansas: eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren: and a brother, Henry Harmelink of Orange City, IA.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charlie, Joe, and Cornie Harmelink; and four sisters, Gertrude Post, Susan Van Tubergan, Dorthea Harmelink, and Minnie Wiechers.
