John was the son of James Den Hartog and Josena (Den Beste) Den Hartog.
His family moved to Minnesota in 1909 and to Orange City in 1913.
On December 11, 1946, he married Alice Vanden Berg Gerritsen at Orange City.
For forty-three years, John was a partner in Den Hartog Brothers Garage in Orange City, retiring in 1963
He was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed church.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Mina and her husband, Ralph Fear, of Everly; son, Marvin Gerritsen and his wife, Kay, of Ogden, Utah; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren, four step-great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers and a sister, Cornelius, of Orange City; Alyda Visser, of Brooten, MN; Art, of Bellgrade, MN; and Elmer, of Hawarden, IA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, James, and William.
