STRICKEN BY DEATH -- J. E. NASH PASSES AWAY IN OREGON. Was Stricken With Paralysis and Dies After Few Weeks Illness

A telegram received here Monday announcing the death of John E. Nash, a former well known resident of this city, sent a thrill of sadness through the hearts of his many old Hawarden friends. He passed away at his ranch home near Roseburg, Ore., Monday morning [Sept. 3], following a stroke of paralysis. Only a few of his relatives here had learned of his recent illness and the news of his death was the first that was known that he had not been in his usual health. A telegram from J. M. Lynn from [illegible] stated that Mrs. Nash and her brother, E. A. Lynn, would accompany the body to Hawarden for interment and that the services here would be under Masonic auspices. No further word has been received up to this morning and the time of the funeral has not been fixed.

About six weeks ago Mr. Nash lost his speech and he made a hurried trip to Portland to consult a specialist. He was informed that his affliction was paralysis and that little could be done for his relief. He returned to his home and his condition continued to grow more critical from day to day until the final summons came.

J. E. Nash was one of the pioneer merchants of this community. He located in Calliope in 1882 where he conducted a general store for a short time alone. The following year the partnership of Nash & Lynn was formed and this firm continued in business here for nearly twenty-five years. The business was moved from Calliope to Hawarden in 1884, and they continued in business here until ten years ago when they disposed of their interests to B. J. Hyink and his father.

Mr. Nash was a tireless worker and his energy in the early days was one of the strong factors in the upbuilding of this city. His foresight and his energy brought about the erection of the handsome granite block which is still one of the substantial business sections of Hawarden. Ten years ago he retired from business and has since made his home in the west. He was a man who made warm and lasting friendships and many will extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved wife in her hour of sorrow.

He was born at Emerald Grove, Rock county, Wis., Oct. 16, 1854, and would have been 62 years of age at his next birthday.

From the Hawarden Independent, Sept. 13, 1917:

J. E. NASH LAID TO REST

Mrs. J. E. Nash, accompanied by her brother and sister, J. M. Lynn and Miss Barbara Lynn arrived in Hawarden Tuesday on the morning Milwaukee train with the body of her husband, which was brought here for interment. The funeral party was met at the depot by the members of the Masonic fraternity and the Eastern Stars, and the body was taken direct to Grace Hill cemetery where it was laid to rest beside the graves of his two sons and infant daughter. The pall bearers were B. T. French, A. G. Ensign, W. H. Wilkinson, Walter Smith, John K. Ofstad and W. R. Green, all old Masonic friends and brothers of the deceased. The Eastern Stars acted as an escort and marched with the members of the Masonic fraternity from the train to the cemetery.

The only services at the grave were those of the Masonic order. This beautiful ritualistic service was most impressively given by T. J. Reeves, Grand Junior Warden, acting as Worshipful Master. Lester Bennett acted as marshal at these ceremonies. The floral tributes by Hawarden friends of the deceased were profuse and beautiful. In respect to the memory of one of Hawarden's first business men and truest friends, the business houses of the city were closed during the funeral hour. Other relatives from out of town in attendance at the services were George Lynn of Linton, N.D.; Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Eastman, Alex. Wallace and his daughter, Mrs. W. Kistle, all of LeMars.
