EARLY DAY HAWARDEN CITIZEN PASSED AWAY MONDAY. Was Pioneer Merchant of Calliope and Hawarden -- Leaves Widow and Two Children

John M. Lynn, pioneer Hawarden business man, passed away Monday [Sept. 15] at his home in Tacoma, Wash., following an illness of more than eight months. Word of his death came in a telegram received Tuesday morning by B. J. Hyink. He suffered a stroke of paralysis last January and for a long time was confined to his bed. Later he improved sufficiently so that he was able to be up and about his home but during the past few months had been failing steadily. The funeral will be held in Tacoma and interment will be made there.

Mr. Lynn was about 72 years of age. For many years he was engaged in the general mercantile business in this city in partnership with his brother-in-law, the late J. E. Nash, who died about thirteen years ago. They operated a store in Calliope for several years but were among the early ones to recognize the advantages of the newer and faster growing town of Hawarden and moved their business to this city in the eighties, occupying for several years the building which stood on the corner where the Gladstone Hotel is now located. In 1890 they erected the double front granite building, now occupied by B. J. Hyink's store, and continued to operate their business there until they sold out to Mr. Hyink in 1907. In the fall of that year Mr. Lynn moved to Tacoma where he engaged in business for a time but shortly afterwards he accepted a position in the waterworks department of the city of Tacoma, which he held until forced through ill health last winter to resign.

During his long years of residence in Hawarden Mr. Lynn took a prominent part in the commercial, [illegible] and social life of the community. He was a member of and always an active worker in the Congregational church society and was identified with almost every movement for community betterment. He served as Hawarden's first city assessor, later as a member of the school board and filled other positions of honor and trust in the community. He was a man of high ideals and strictest business integrity and enjoyed the friendship and esteem of his comtemporary citizens to a marked degree. His death will be mourned by many old friends here.

Besides his widow he is survived by one son, Lawrence Lynn of Tacoma, Wash., and one daughter, Mrs. H. M. Howell of Tibbstown, N.J., besides several grandchildren, among whom is Bernard L. Hyink of Hawarden.
