Nanning was the son of Henry and Rena Vegter. At the age of 25, he moved to the United States, settling in Chicago. A year later he came to this area.

On February 11, 1932, he married Johanna Gesink, at Orange City.

They lived in Sheldon, where Nanning operated two gas stations and a vegetable farm. From about 1945 to 1970, they farmed near Alton. They then retired to Orange City.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Henry, of Saluda, North Carolina; three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Betty) Vande Pol of Pella; Mrs. Stanley (Irene) Huisman, of Orange City; and Mrs. Dennis (Glenda) Tweet, of Chandler, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Mike, of Moline, Michigan; and a brother and sisters in the Netherlands.
