Herman Luymes passed away at a local hospital Tuesday, February 1 at 8:45 a.m. after a three months illness of complications following a gall bladder operation. He had attained the age of 53 years and 7 months.

He was born on a farm six miles north of Orange City on June 3, 1884. Later the family moved to town and he received his education in the Orange City public schools. At an early age he obtained employment in the Vande Steeg store where he worked until 1905 when he formed a partnership with Simon Douwstra of Middleburg and they bought the Middleburg General Store.

On September 12, 1907 he was married to Miss Nellie De Jong and they lived at Middleburg until 1920 when he accepted a position in the Erkes-Vander Ploeg store where he served faithfully until he became ill on November 15th.

He is survived by his widow, and three children: Ellen, Mrs. Atwood Scott of Omaha; Conrad of Los Angeles, Calif., and Marion still at home. He is also survived by two sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Sophia Behrends, Chris Luymes of Mason City, Isaac Luymes and Mrs. George De Jong.

Funeral services have been arranged for Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home and 1:30 at Trinity Reformed church, with Rev. Mr. J. G. Brouwer officiating assisted by Rev. Mr. L. Nattress. Interment will be made in the Orange City cemetery.

A variant obituary in the Alton Democrat (Feb. 4, 1938) adds this information:
A number of blood transfusions had been given the patient and he was thought to be improving somewhat, but suddenly took a turn for the worse and failed to rally. He had submitted to several operations, both major and minor, since being taken ill three months ago.
He was born on the Luymes family homestead northeast of town, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Teunis Luymes, pioneer Sioux County citizens.
He started work for John Vande Steeg at 50 cents a week.
His Orange City employer since 1920 was the Pure Food grocery. He was one of the most widely known and most competent grocery men in the county.
His brother Chris is a resident of Fort Dodge; his other three siblings live in Orange City. His daughter Ellen's full name is Ellen Mae.

A news note in the Sioux County Capital of Feb. 10, 1938, says that cousins Mrs. J. De Boer and Mr. and Mrs. John Lefers, of Corsica, S.D., attended the funeral.
