Arie Van Marel died at his home at Pella on Monday evening, Sept. 24 at the age of 84 years and 6 months. Deceased was born on March 6, 1844. He leaves a wife and 4 sons, 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The body was brought to Orange City. Funeral services were held here from the First Ref. church, Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating.

Mr. Van Marel was the last one of Pella's civil war veterans. He served in Co. C 15th Iowa Infantry. He was in the campaign around Vicksburg in the spring and summer of 1863, having served the preceding year in Tennessee and elsewhere with Grant's army following Shiloh. He was later in Sherman's march to the sea. Mr. Van Marel had been in the United States only fifteen years when he enlisted in the army on his period of service and honorable discharge. Following the war he became a farmer, living for a number of years in Sioux county. He moved back to Pella when he left the farm and had lived there quietly since.

A news note in the previous week's Alton Democrat (Sept. 28, 1928, Orange City news) says that Mr. and Mrs. Jake Van Marel, Mr. Gt. Van Marel and Mrs. Joe Vander Schaaf were at Pella to spend a few days with their father, A. Van Marel.

A news note in the Alton Democrat of April 27, 1928 (Orange City news) says that Dr. G. P. Van Marel of Glendale, Arizona, who visited his sick father, A. Van Marel, at Pella, stopped in Orange City for a day on his way back.
