DEATH OF MRS. VAN MAREL

Hendricka, wife of Arie Van Marel, died very suddenly at the family home five miles northwest of Orange City, last Friday, January 19th.

Deceased was 53 years of age and was the mother of seven children, four of whom survive her. Mrs. Van Marel's maiden name was Van Rossum, and she and the surviving husband were united in marriage at Pella, Iowa, January 1, 1868. The Van Marels were among the very first settlers of Sioux county, coming here from Pella in 1870, and have been very prosperous.

Deceased was a devoted christian, a kind wife and mother and her death will long be mourned by hosts of friends here and elsewhere. She had been a sufferer from that fatal disease, diabetes, for several years, and although she was suddenly taken sick on Thursday and passed away the following day apparently from other complications, the former disease was the immediate cause of her death.

The funeral was held from the First Reformed church in this city Monday afternoon, the services being conducted by the regular pastor, the Rev. Steffens, assisted by Rev. Kolyn. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.

Mrs. Arie Van Marel died at her home five miles northeast of town (Orange City) on Friday aged fifty three years. She had been a resident of Sioux county for nearly thirty years and leaves a wide circle of friends to mourn with her husband and four children.

(The 1880 census of Holland township Sioux county IA lists Arie b. 1bt 1845, wife Henrietta abt 1847, children Gysbert 11, Jacob 7 and Garret 1. Living with them was her parents Gysbert Van Rossum and wife Hendrika. Arie later married Maria Synhorst in Aug of 1900 in Pella.)
