A telegram came to the Messrs. Pins [J. A. and Henry, of Alton] on Wednesday night, announcing the serious illness of their sister, Mrs. Barbara Kenkel, at Earling. Henry left Thursday morning for her bedside, but was recalled from Sioux City by a telegram announcing that she had rallied. Another telegram reached them Thursday afternoon saying she was worse again and Henry left on the 3:40 passenger. Friday morning came the sad intelligence that Mrs. Kenkel passed away at ten o'clock Thursday night [Jan. 18]. Her death is a peculiarly sad one, as it leaves eight children without the loving care of a parent--the father having died last spring. The children are Lizzie, John, Lena, Katie, Gertrude, Peter, Theresa and Barbara. The oldest is married and the youngest a child of four years. Deceased was about forty-three years old. Ed went down to Earling on the morning train Friday.
