Mrs. Dorothy Even, age 75, of Alton, passed away on Friday, July 2, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, July 6, at 10:30am, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. The Rev. Fr. Paul Eisele will officiate. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. There will be a rosary on Tuesday, at 10:00am, at the church.
Dorothy Ann was born on December 31, 1934, in Orange City, the daughter of John and Mina (Aalberts) Verdoorn. She was raised in rural Orange City. She attended a country school through the fifth grade and then graduated from the Orange City High School.

She also took several courses at the Iowa State University in Ames and the Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon.

On August 31, 1954, she married Thomas W. Even, Sr., in Alton. Except for two years in Twenty-nine Palms, California, they made their home in Alton. Tom passed away on January 2, 1977, in Orange City.

In 2005, Dorothy moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, and in October of 2006, she transferred to the Long Term Care Facility.

For a short time she was a nurse’s aid at the Orange City Municipal Hospital. For several years, she was employed at the Sioux County Treasurer’s Office in Orange City, and she served as City Clerk for the town of Alton for many years.

Mrs. Even was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She also belonged to the Floyd American Legion Post Auxiliary. She participated in Beginning Experience and served as a cub scout den mother.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and pulling weeds. She often showed her 1958 Pontiac station wagon at area car shows.

Survivors include her six children, Val, and her husband, Bill Davis, of Alton; Ricci Even, and his wife, Barb, of Camdenton, Missouri; Randal "Chuck" Even, of Overland Park, Kansas; Rachael, and her husband, Mike Santarsiero, of Gainesville, Florida; Thomas Even, Jr., and his wife, Donna, of Alton; and Becki, and her husband, Scott De Kock, of Orange City; fourteen grandchildren, Dustin Even, Cassandra Markuson, Amber Even, Dan James, Amanda James, Jonathan Even, Christopher Even, Molly Even, Vincent Santarsiero, Megan Santarsiero, Thomas Even III, Travis Even, Jessica De Kock, and Jade De Kock; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, JoAnn Huizenga Spronk, of Orange City.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Marie Van Veldhuizen, and her husband’s parents, J. T. "Matty" and Blanche Even.
