Anthony Slothouber, age 93, of Sheldon, Iowa, formerly of Boyden, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Prairie View Home in Sanborn.
Burial in the Sheridan Township Cemetery in Boyden.

The Lord called home Anthony (Tony) Slothouber, age 93, on June 29, 2010. He was born April 21,1917 in Middleburg, Iowa, the son of Gerrit and Minnie (Langstraat) Slothouber. He married Sophia Bomgaars, his lifelong Sweetheart, on January 24, 1946 in the Newkirk Reformed Church. They raised their family in Boyden, and in later years moved first to Sheldon and then Sanborn.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 64 years, Sophia, and two children, Mary Jean, married to Elmer Schmidt of Sheldon, and Dr. Wayne Slothouber, married to Marlene of Sioux Falls. Grandchildren are Sherry and Dave Tiedemann of Hull, Steve and Jill Schmidt of Minneapolis, Sheila and Mark Uittenbogaard of Sanborn, Scott and Amy Schmidt of Sheldon, Jason Slothouber of Boulder, Colorado, and Megan Slothouber of Lincoln, Nebraska. There are also 11 great-grandchildren that will miss Great Grandpa. Tony was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Tony served in the US Army Air Corp during World War II, attaining the rank of 1st Lt. He was on active duty from March, 1941 to March, 1946, serving in the United States, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a member of the Boyden American Legion and was presented with a certificate in 2006 for 60 years of active membership in the Legion.
Tony and Sophia made their home in Boyden, where they owned and operated Tony’s General Merchandise Store for several years. He later started an anhydrous ammonia business and was also a county assessor. Tony co-founded and managed Quality Farm Supply until his retirement.
His favorite pastime was spending time with family and working in his wood shop. Tony was a skilled craftsman and made original furniture, toys for grandchildren, and items for church and community. Family functions such as softball games and holidays were a priority for him.
Tony’s faith in his Redeemer God was evident in every part of his life. The simplicity of the gospel of God’s love and forgiveness was passed on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren while the realization of the vastness of God was acknowledged as he explored with, taught and challenged 50 years of Sunday School and Catechism classes. During his lifelong membership at the First Reformed Church of Boyden, Tony offered many years as elder or deacon. He continued serving God during retirement as he and Sophia spent several winters ministering at a Native American mission church in Parker, Arizona.
Tony’s response to God’s presence in his life was lived out in his daily relationships with family, friends, neighbors and business contacts. His commitment and service to God, family and country, and his deep faith in God and how that influenced every aspect of his life will be the legacy that is passed to his family and all who knew him.
