Hilene Ruth was born on April 11, 1950, in Le Mars, the daughter of Henry G. and Della (Brunsting) Blankespoor. She attended Hull Christian School and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull in 1968. She also earned a Licensed Practical Nurse degree at the Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
She then worked as a nurse in the Orange City, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Sheldon hospitals, where she enjoyed providing physical and spiritual care to her patients. She retired in 2008, due to illness, after working 37 years at the Sheldon hospital.
She married Gary Alan Westra on June 12, 1970, in Hull. They lived in Carlisle, Boyden, and Hospers, and for the last eighteen years in Hull. She was a longtime member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church.
She loved the people she worked with and enjoyed going to her job each day, even when her health was failing. She had a passion for flower gardening and liked walking, quilting, and reading. She was a wonderful Christian woman, who showed us how to love others with her actions and words. Her strength and courage were an inspiration to many. She was still touching people's lives until her last days on Earth. But most of all, she loved being a mother and a grandmother.
Survivors include her husband of forty years; three children and their spouses, Heidi and Paul Lindemulder, of Fresno, California; Ranee and Jason Clapp, of Kansas City, Kansas; and Scott and Andrea Westra, of Hull; six grandchildren, Julia and Josie Lindemulder, Emma and Isaac Clapp, and Macy and Logan Westra; two sisters and their husbands, Marlene and Ken Wynkoop, of Denver, Colorado; and Sherri and Marv Addink, of Sioux Falls; and three brothers and their wives, Gil and Jan Blankespoor, of Sioux Falls; Harv and Marlene Blankespoor, of Holland, Michigan; and Ron and Wendy Blankespoor, of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jacob and
Joseph Lindemulder.
