Mr. Vernon Mouw, age 81, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at his residence.
There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, June 30, at 2:00pm, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman and the Rev. Paul Bakker will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Wednesday, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.
Vernon John was born on July 2, 1928, at Orange City, the son of Otto and Sarah (Lubbers) Mouw. He was raised in rural Orange City, where he attended country school. He also attended the Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City. During the Korean Conflict, he was stationed in Germany for two years.
On November 2, 1950, he married Mary Ellen Boonstra in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where he drove trucks for Pals Transfer, which later became All-American Freight. Later, he also drove buses for the MOC – Floyd Valley Schools.
Vern was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where he had served as a deacon and Sunday school superintendent. He also belonged to the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post and the Lions Club, both in Orange City.
He enjoyed sports. He liked going to Northwestern College games and watching the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings. In addition, he enjoyed camping and traveling with his wife, and playing cards with friends. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of his life.
Survivors include his wife of almost sixty years; five children and their spouses, Terry and Jolene "Joey" Mouw, of Orange City; Peggy and Dennis Faist, of Aurelia; David and Doreen Mouw, of Orange City; Timothy and Kathy Mouw, of Holland, Michigan; and Sarah and Chris McKenna, of San Jose, California; nine grandchildren, Terrasa, and her husband, Tim Grewell; Jeromy Mouw, and his wife, Cindy; Dan Mouw, and his wife, Heidi; Eric Baker, and his wife, Mindy; Lauren, and her husband, Randall Shear; Jennifer, and her husband, Chris Putzier; Jason Mouw, and his wife, Ashley; Jonathan Mouw, and his special friend, Maraya Klave; and Tyler Mouw; five step-grandchildren, Corey Faist, and his wife, Liz; Curtis Faist, and his wife, Wendy; Clint Faist, and his wife, Dawn; Nicholas Wiseman; and Christopher Wiseman; fourteen great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Violet Mouw, of Orange City; and Aletha Mouw, of Sheldon; and Mary’s family, Harold and Ann Boonstra, Bob and Myrna Boonstra, Norm and Velma Boonstra, Lois and Frank Vogel, and Rudy Boonstra.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Lucy Mouw; two sisters, Jennie (Ted) Rowerdink and Myna (John) Hofmeyer; and three brothers, Henry, Ralph (Genevieve), and Alfred Mouw.
