John Lande has just died on the operating table at the hospital here in Hawarden. Such was the shocking message received in Ireton about four o'clock Tuesday afternoon. To say that it was a shock is putting it mildly, for John Lande was about the last person one would have guessed would be the next to be summoned from this life by the Grim Reaper. In the full flower of young manhood and seemingly sound in health and with the brightest of prospects for the future his chances for long life seemed better than most. For such a one to be thus suddenly taken hence brings a sharp and distinct shock to everyone. He had been in his usual good health up to last Friday when he was only slightly indisposed. Monday evening his symptoms were sufficiently alarming to cause him to be taken to Hawarden for examination and possible operation. This was done Tuesday afternoon and as stated he died on the operating table. It is understood that by that time there was a complete severance of the bowel by the diseased appendix. The body was taken to Bray's undertaking parlors in Hawarden where it was prepared for burial and then brought to Ireton. John S. Lande was the only child of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. G. W. Lande. He was born Oct. 13, 1889, and was nearly twenty-seven years of age. His birth place was on the farm in Eagle Township, still owned by the next to be summoned from this life by the Grim Reaper.

On reaching his majority he came to town and took a position in the bank. Since the closing of the Farmers and Merchants bank two years ago he has conducted a loan and insurance business. Three years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Clara Oakland who with his parents survive him.

John Lande was an even tempered young mand without a disagreeable trait or a bad habit. He did not have an enemy in the worlds and was universally liked for his genial ways. The funeral will be at 10 A.M., Friday from the home of his parents and conducted by Rev. Norgaard of Canton. The remains will then be conveyed to Highland where some further service will be held in the Norwegian Lutheran Church. Interment will be made in the cemetery there.

Alton Democrat issue of 5 August 1916, Ireton column.

The sudden and unlooked for death of John S. Lande Tuesday afternoon came to the people of Ireton as a tremendous shock. A young man of twenty-seven, in the very flower and prime of young manhood, seemingly in the most robust health, his sudden taking off once more calls to mind the fact that "in the midst of life we are in death." He was in his usual good health up to last Friday when he complained of some slight disposition. By Monday his symptoms had become serious enough that he was taken to Hawarden for examination and a possible operation. Tuesday afternoon the operation was begun but never finished for he died on the operating table. The appendix was found highly inflamed and the bowel completely severed a condition that would necessarily be fatal. The body was brought to Ireton by auto Tuesday and prepared for burial. The funeral will be at 10:00 A.M. from the home of his father, Geo. W. Lande and conducted by Rev. Norgaard of Canton, S.D. The remains will then be taken to the Norwegian Lutheran church at Highland where some further services will be held and interment in the cemetery there. John S. Lande was born October 13, 1889 and his birthplace was the farm in Eagle township, which is still owned by his father. There his boyhood and youth was passed. At his majority about five years ago he came to Ireton and took a position in the bank. About three years ago he was married to Miss Clara Oakland, who with his parents survive him. Since the Farmers Bank quit business two years ago he has conducted a loan and insurance office. John Lande was an even tempered young man without a bad habit or an enemy in the world. He was liked for his gentle ways and his friends were legion.
