LeRoy "Bud" Mackey, 81, of Hawarden, died suddenly on Tuesday, March 28, 2000 at the emergency room of the Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.

Funeral service was Saturday, April 1, at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Jeff Swanson officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

LeRoy Mackey was born July 13, 1918 in Pipestone, Minn., to Roy and Mae (Ewing) Mackey. He married Charlotte Dahl on Dec. 15, 1942 at Pipestone. He served with the U.S. Army in the 3rd Armed Division during World War II. He was injured in the Battle of the Bulge on Dec. 23, 1944. He received a Purple Heart, the Presidential Citation and the ETO awards.

Following the war, Mr. Mackey owned Standard Oil in Pipestone for four years. They moved to Adrian, Minn. in 1950 where he worked in an appliance store. In 1953 they moved to Mitchell, S.D. and in 1956 to Hawarden. He worked as a Sioux City Journal area distributor until 1979. He was also a substitute and then full-time rural mail carrier until 1984.

Mr. Mackey was active in the Hawarden Boy Scouts and 32 boys became Eagle Scouts under his leadership for 29 years. He received many Scouting awards, including the highest award the Silver Beaver Award. He was also active in the American Legion as a past commander, active in the Chamber of Commerce and a charter member of the American Lutheran Church. He built the cross, chairs and alter for the church when it was built.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Charlotte, four sons, Charles and wife Susan of Buffalo, Minn., Bernard and wife Lari of Omaha, Neb., James and wife Sarah of Chandler, Ariz., and Scot of Hawarden; a daughter Julie Van Peursem and husband Kim of Orange City; a sister, Eleanor Trigg of Pipestone; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
