Charlotte Mackey, 82, of Hawarden, a resident at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, died Monday, June 6, 2005, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital. Funeral service was June 9 at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Jeff Swanson officiating. Burial followed in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Charlotte Mackey was born May 29, 1923 at Goodwin, S.D., the daughter of Charles and Anna Katherine (Rohweder) Dahl. She graduated from the Pipestone, Minn. High School and married LeRoy "Bud" Mackey Dec. 15, 1942 in Pipestone. She worked as a nurse during WWII and in 1950 the couple moved to Adrian, Minn. They moved to Mitchell, S.D. in 1953 and to Hawarden in 1956. Charlotte was a cook at Sioux Empire College, she assisted her husband with the business of distributing the Sioux City Journal. She was active as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and helped her husband with his Boy Scout activities.

Charlotte was a charter member of the American Lutheran Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent. She also started the Crafty Cats group.

Her husband, Bud died March 28, 2000.

Charlotte is survived by four sons, Charles of Buffalo, Minn., Bernard of Sioux Falls, James of Chandler, Ariz. and Scot also of Sioux Falls,; a daughter, Julie Van Peursem of Orange City; a sister, Patty Morrill of Sioux Falls; 17 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother and three sisters.
